Landlord slammed over bizarre text to potential tenant: ‘That’s illegal’

A woman has revealed the bizarre reason she and her partner were denied a rental property by a landlord. Christina Mayo revealed she and her partner, Devante Mclemore, had inspected a property in Tennessee. However, when filling out their rental application, the pair came across a strange section labelled “Freedom of Religion”. For more Real Estate related news and videos check out Real Estate >> Under the sentence “I acknowledge that the landlord of this property is a professing Christian” there were four options to choose, outlining the prospective tenants’ own religious status or views. Although confused by the questionnaire, the pair continued and submitted their application. They then received an email from the landlord, who denied their application because of their response in that section. “Can someone help explain to me what I just f****** encountered ?” Mayo asked in a Facebook post, along with screenshots of the conversation. “This is an application for a house for re...

Twitter not safer under Elon Musk, says former head of safety

Twitter's former head of trust and safety Yoel Roth on Tuesday said the social media company was not safer under new owner Elon Musk, warning in his first interview since resigning this month that the company no longer had enough staff for safety work. Roth had tweeted after Musk's takeover that by some measures, Twitter safety had improved under the billionaire's ownership. Asked in an interview at the Knight Foundation conference on Tuesday whether he still felt that way, Roth said: "No." Roth was a Twitter veteran who helped steer the social media platform through several watershed decisions, including the move to permanently suspend its most famous user, former US President Donald Trump, last year. His departure further rattled advertisers, many of whom backed away from Twitter after Musk laid off half of the staff, including many involved with content moderation. Before Musk assumed the helm at Twitter, about 2,200 people globally were foc...

Spotify, Epic Games get ally in Musk in fight against Apple fees

Elon Musk's declaration of war on Apple in a series of tweets on Monday gives Spotify and Fortnite maker Epic Games a powerful ally in taking the tech giant to task over its 30% App Store fees. Musk criticized the fee Apple charges software developers for in-app purchases, and posted a meme suggesting he was willing to "go to war" rather than pay the levy. Musk also suggested Apple had threatened to block Twitter from its app store, although he did not explain why. Spotify has previously submitted antitrust complaints against the iPhone-maker in Europe, and Epic Games sued Apple in the United States in 2020. Since buying Twitter last month, Musk has unveiled plans to charge users $8 per month for getting verified on the social media platform to boost its profitability and avoid bankruptcy. A 30% cut on that would be a big dent to those plans. The European Commission has been investigating whether Apple's rules for app develo...

iPhone Pro shipments may fall 20 mln units short of estimates

Apple Inc's iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max model shipments could miss market expectations by up to 20 million units in the holiday quarter due to labor unrest at a major Chinese factory, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said. Kuo is the latest to flag a hit to the world's most valuable company from protests over pay and strict Covid19 curbs at the world's biggest iPhone factory, the Foxconn-operated plant in the central city of Zhengzhou. He trimmed his estimate for quarterly iPhone shipments by about 20% to between 70 million and 75 million units , compared with the market consensus of 80 million to 85 million units . Apple shares were trading down more than 2%, set to add to the 6% decline so far this month as worries grow over shipments in the all-important holiday sales season. Kuo, in a blog post on Tuesday, also predicted that the supply shortfall could erase demand for the more popular Pro models, instead of deferrin...

UK ditches ban on 'legal but harmful' online content

LONDON: Britain will not force tech giants to remove content that is "legal but harmful" from their platforms after campaigners and lawmakers raised concerns that the move could curtail free speech, the government said on Monday. Online safety laws would instead focus on the protection of children and on ensuring companies removed content that was illegal or prohibited in their terms of service, it said, adding that it would not specify what legal content should be censored. Platform owners, such as Facebook-owner Meta and Twitter, would be banned from removing or restricting user-generated content, or suspending or banning users, where there is no breach of their terms of service or the law, it said. The government had previously said social media companies could be fined up to 10% of turnover or 18 million pounds ($22 million) if they failed to stamp out harmful content such as abuse even if it fell below the criminal threshold, while senior managers could also face...

Scammers are now capitalising on the nude trend by offering a fake app that claims to have the ability to remove the blur - but what it really does is quite different. Instead of seeing naked bodies, users will be downloading malware capable of obtaining passwords and credit cards stored within the user’s browser, files from their computer, cryptocurrency wallets and Discord accounts, a report by security firm Checkmarx said. British lawmakers say business at risk from lack of chip support

Britain must support its semiconductor industry to win inward investment and secure supplies of the chips essential to its industrial and economic prospects, a group of lawmakers said. Spurred by a global shortage, governments in the United States and Europe have ploughed tens of billions of dollars into semiconductors, including building new manufacturing "fabs". Britain, however, had not published its promised strategy on the sector and risked falling behind in securing inward investment, the lawmakers said in a report on Monday. "The government is putting UK plc at significant risk by failing to take action in support of the semiconductor industry," said Darren Jones, chair of the Business , energy and industrial strategy committee. The committee said Britain should cooperate with the United States under its CHIPS act, and engage with Taiwan, which is the world's biggest manufacturer of advanced chips. The lawmakers said while Britain's semicond...
