Qualcomm to bring satellite-based messaging to Android phones

Qualcomm Inc has partnered with Iridium Communications Inc to provide a satellite-based messaging service on premium smart phones running Google's Android operating system, the chipmaker said on Thursday. The partnership comes months after Apple Inc unveiled a similar feature allowing iPhone 14 models to send emergency messages via satellite in some countries such as the United States and Canada. Those phones also contain a Qualcomm chip that can talk to satellites when there is no Wi-Fi or cellular data connection. Qualcomm said on Thursday the new service, Snapdragon Satellite, will be available in certain regions from the second half of 2023 starting devices using the second generation Snapdragon 8 mobile platform. Snapdragon Satellite can also be enabled on other devices including laptops, vehicles, and tablets, it added, without specifying if those devices would need any special equipment. WhatsApp is working on cross-platform messaging

A new WhatsApp Android beta update (version 2.23.19.8) released today contains a new screen called Third-party chats. Reported by WABetaInfo, the title suggests that Meta might be working on encrypted messages across cross-platforms. The Beta update was released just days after the European Commission confirmed WhatsApp owner Meta meets the definition of a “gatekeeper” under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) and will be required to interoperate with third-party messaging apps by March 2024. The law is aimed at keeping gatekeepers “from imposing unfair conditions” and to “ensure the openness of important digital services.” The apps will have to allow their users to remove pre-installed apps or shop alternative app stores. Musk says Twitter to soon allow calls, encrypted messaging

Twitter Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk on Tuesday revealed details about new features including adding calls and encrypted messaging coming to the platform. Last year, Musk flagged plans for "Twitter 2.0 The Everything App", which he said would have features such as encrypted direct messages (DMs), longform tweets and payments. "Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number," Musk said in a tweet on Tuesday. The call feature on Twitter will bring the micro-blogging platform into line with the likes of Meta's social media applications, Facebook and Instagram, which have similar features. Musk said a version of encrypted direct messages will be available on Twitter starting Wednesday, but did not say if calls will be encrypted . Twitter this week said it will start a cleansing process by removing and archiving accounts...

A better version of ChatGPT intends to create AI messaging

Quora has been working on an app called Poe, to fill the gap in features that ChatGPT does not provide and to make all chatbots easier to use in one place. “We have a lot of different things we want to build on top of this Technology ,” Adam D’Angelo, the CEO of Quora says. “But the starting point is just, let’s make it easy for people to use it.” With emerging AI tech, Angelo believes that it won't be long before dozens of bots are created all over for different purposes by small tech startups. He wants Poe to be the platform, developers trust to place their bots instead of creating their own apps. “So we hope that by bringing down the barrier to creating a good user experience we will enable this explosion of applications,” D’Angelo told The Verge. Recently, Quora announced a user-created bots feature that allowed users to build their own bot to talk to with different features, like teaching them Japanese or conversin...
