OpenAI's ChatGPT breaches privacy rules, says Italian watchdog

Italy's data protection authority has told OpenAI that its artificial intelligence chatbot application ChatGPT breaches data protection rules, the watchdog said on Monday as it presses ahead with an investigation started last year. The authority, known as Garante, is one of the European Union's most proactive in assessing AI platform compliance with the bloc's data privacy regime. Last year it banned ChatGPT over alleged breaches of EU privacy rules. The service was subsequently reactivated after OpenAI addressed issues concerning, among other things, the right of users to decline to consent to its use of personal data to train its algorithms. At the time, the regulator said it would continue its investigations. It has since concluded that there are elements indicating one or more potential data privacy violations, it said in a statement without providing further detail. Thousands of TAFE SA students’ personal data stolen in data breach

The personal data of thousands of TAFE SA students has been stolen in a data breach. Information relating to more than 2000 students’ identification forms was involved. SA Police discovered USBs containing scanned copies of student identification forms when collecting evidence in an unrelated investigation. Service NSW breach exposes personal data affecting thousands of customers

The personal information of Service NSW customers has been exposed to other logged-in individuals during a privacy incident, the agency says. An update released to the “My services” dashboard on March 20 resulted in the data breach , Service NSW chief executive officer Greg Wells said in an email to affected customers shared with AAP on Monday. Personal information available through linked services that might have been visible included driver’s licence and vehicle registration details, contact information and children’s names. The agency said it believed the personal information available during the 94-minute window was not searchable and was isolated to the website. More than 130,000 Telstra customers’ data released in major privacy breach

Personal details of more than 130,000 Telstra customers have been exposed online in a major privacy breach. The telco giant admitted the data, which includes the names, addresses and phone numbers of customers who had asked to remain unlisted, had been released on the White Pages and Directory Assistance Services websites. Millions of Twitter users may have had their personal data - including personal phone numbers and email addresses - breached in a massive cybersecurity attack. Last week, some 5.4 million user records were exposed, according to Chad Loder, the founder of cyber security awareness company Habitu8.
