Google introduces generative AI to Search in India, Japan

Alphabet's Google said on Wednesday it introduced generative artificial intelligence to its Search tool for users in India and Japan that will show text or visual results to prompts, including summaries. The feature, which was first launched only in the United States, was rolled out this week in the two countries, and users will have the choice to opt in for it. Japanese users will be able to use the feature in their local languages, while it will be available in English and Hindi in India. Google's search feature is meant to be used for seeking information, such as locating something to purchase. It is different from its chatbot Bard, which has a persona that can hold human-like conversations to, for instance, generate software code. Google's AI search com Pet es with Microsoft's Bing. Behind EU lawmakers' challenge to rein ChatGPT and generative AI

LONDON: As recently as February, generative AI did not feature prominently in EU lawmakers ' plans for regulating artificial intelligence technologies such as ChatGPT. The bloc's 108-page proposal for the AI Act, published two years earlier, included only one mention of the word "chatbot." References to AI-generated content largely referred to deepfakes: images or audio designed to impersonate human beings. By mid-April, however, members of European Parliament (MEPs) were racing to update those rules to catch up with an explosion of interest in generative AI, which has provoked awe and anxiety since OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT six months ago. That scramble culminated on Thursday with a new draft of the legislation which identified copyright protection as a core piece of the effort to keep AI in check. Interviews with four lawmakers and two other sources close to discussions reveal for the first time how over just 11 days this small group of po...

EU lawmakers to have tiered approach to regulate generative AI

The EU parliament is working to tackle generative AI as they fix their negotiating position for legislative talks next month and a final consensus on the bloc's draft law is hoped to be reached by the end of the year. Member of the EU Parliament (MEP) Dragos Tudorache, the co-rapporteur for the EU’s AI Act, told Tech Crunch, “This is the last thing still standing in the negotiation. As we speak, we are crossing the last ‘T’s and dotting the last ‘I’s. And sometime next week I’m hoping that we will actually close — which means that sometime in May we will vote.” In recent months tech giant lobbyists have been pushing for regulating generative AI with big companies like Google and Microsoft. Google to use generative AI in its ad business

Alphabet Inc's Google plans to introduce generative artificial intelligence into its advertising Business over the coming months to create "novel" advertisements, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing an internal presentation. Generative AI is a type of Technology that relies on past data to create rather than identify content. Last month, Google began the public release of its chatbot Bard, seeking users and feedback to gain ground on Microsoft Corp in the race to top the market for AI Technology . Per the presentation, advertisers can supply "creative" content such as imagery, video and text relating to a particular ad campaign, and the AI will then mix this material to generate ads based on the target audience, along with sales targets, the report said. While there have been concerns about the wider impact of AI on issues like disinformation, phishing attempts and cybercrime, Google plans to put in guardrails to...
