Canadian federal police says they were targeted by cyberattack

Canadian federal police said on Friday their systems were targeted by an "alarming" cyber attack but there was no impact on operations and no known threat to the safety of Canadians. "The situation is evolving quickly but at this time, there is no impact on RCMP operations and no known threat to the safety and security of Canadians," a spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told reporters on Friday afternoon. "While a breach of this magnitude is alarming, the quick work and mitigation strategies put in place demonstrate the significant steps the RCMP has taken to detect and prevent these types of threats," the spokesperson added. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they launched a probe into the attack and were trying to determine the extent of the breach, adding there were no known impacts on intelligence services. Australia to ban paying of ransoms to cyber criminals

Australia's Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil on Sunday said the government would consider making illegal the paying of ransoms to cyber hackers, following recent cyber attacks affecting millions of Australians. "We will do that in the context of ... cyber strategy," she said. The comments come after O'Neil, on Saturday, formalised a new cyber-policing model between the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Signals Directorate - which intercepts electro...

The data exposed included home addresses, drivers' licences and passport numbers. Medibank Health insurer Medibank Private, which covers about one-sixth of Australians, said personal and significant amounts of Health claims data of around 9.7 million of its current and former customers was compromised, forcing it to flag a hit to earnings and withdraw forecast for a key metric. Woolworths Australia...
