Hackers hit Australian state's court recording database

SYDNEY: Hackers accessed the court recordings database in Australia's Victoria state and disrupted the audio-visual in- court Technology network, impacting recordings and transcription services, an official said on Tuesday. Recordings of some court hearings between Nov. 1 and Dec. 21, 2023 may have been stolen, Court Services Victoria CEO Louise Anderson said in a statement. Some hearings before Nov. 1 may also have been affected, she said. "The potential access is confined to recordings stored on the network. No other court systems or records, including employee or financial data, were accessed," Anderson said. Hearings in January would proceed after the affected network was isolated and disabled, and court officials were working closely with the government's cyber security experts. Court Services Victoria did not reveal whether it received any ransomware demands. State-sponsored cyber groups and hackers have stepped up their assault on Australia...

Musk asks court to reject SEC's bid to make him testify

Elon Musk asked a federal judge on Thursday not to force him to testify in the US Securities and Exchange Commission's probe into his $44 billion takeover of social media site Twitter. Musk filed the objections in San Francisco federal court , where the SEC sued him on Oct. 5 to make him testify for the probe, which it launched in April 2022. The SEC's subpoena exceeds the agency's investigative authority, is overly burdensome and seeks "irrelevant evidence", Musk's lawyers said in the filing. The SEC has said it was investigating Musk's 2022 purchases of Twitter stock and his statements and SEC filings relating to Twitter -- which Musk subsequently renamed X -- and that Musk had refused to attend a September interview for the probe. Alex Spiro, an attorney for Musk, has called the investigation "misguided." On Thursday, Spiro and Musk's other lawyers said in the filing: "The SEC’s pursuit of Mr. Musk has...

US asks appeals court to pause Microsoft deal

WASHINGTON:  The US Federal Trade Commission on Thursday asked an appeals court to temporarily stop Microsoft from closing its $69 billion purchase of "Call of Duty" maker Activision Blizzard, just hours after a federal judge rejected a similar request. The San Francisco federal court had ruled in favor of Microsoft on Tuesday, saying the FTC had failed to show the deal would be illegal under antitrust law. The FTC appealed that loss late on Wednesday, and Microsoft said it would fight that appeal. On Thursday evening, the FTC filed an emergency motion to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals asking for a "temporary pause " on Microsoft's closing of its planned deal to buy Activision. Any outstanding regulatory hurdle makes it more likely the agreement between Microsoft and Activision will expire on July 18 without the deal having been completed. After July 18, either company will be free to walk away unless they negotiate an ex...
