OpenAI's Altman in talks to raise funds for chips, AI initiative

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is in talks with investors, including the UAE, to raise funds for a tech initiative to boost the world's chip-building capacity and expand its ability to power AI, among other things, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. The project could require raising as much as $5 trillion to $7 trillion, the report added, citing people familiar with the matter. OpenAI and its biggest investor Microsoft did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Altman's fundraising plans are aimed at solving constraints to OpenAI's growth, including the scarcity of artificial intelligence (AI) chips required to train large language models behind systems such as ChatGPT, the WSJ reported. The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has forecast a 13.1% jump in global chip sales to $595.3 billion this year, compared with a drop of about 8% in sales in 2023. The amounts Altman has discussed are outlandishly large by the standa...

Google DeepMind scientists in talks to leave and form AI startup

A pair of scientists at Google's artificial intelligence subsidiary DeepMind is in talks with investors to form an AI startup in Paris, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the conversations. More talks required on AI rules French minister says

EU countries and lawmakers may have to meet for yet another round of talks to hammer out crucial details of rules for artificial intelligence even if they clinch a deal on Wednesday, French Digital Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Tuesday. Both sides and the European Commission, which drafted the rules two years ago, had been hoping that Wednesday's discussion would be the final one, following negotiations in June, July, September and October. However, Europe's hopes of rolling out the first-of-its-kind rules could be derailed by disagreements over whether AI can be used in biometric surveillance and over the use of AI systems such as foundation models exemplified by Microsoft-backed OpenAI. There is still a gap between both sides, Barrot said. "Now I see that we are moving closer but I see that there Is still a distance. So I don't want us to rush and to constrain ourselves to a specific date," he told reporters. "If we have a further trilogue it ...

Google, Universal Music in talks for deal on AI 'deepfakes'

Alphabet's Google and Universal Music are in talks to license artists' voices and melodies for artificial intelligence-generated songs, Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing four people familiar with the matter. The music industry is grappling with "deepfake" songs, made using generative AI, that mimic artists' voices, often without their consent. The goal behind the talks is to develop a tool for fans to create tracks legitimately and pay the owners of the copyrights for them, the report said, adding the artists would have a choice to opt in the process. Discussions between Google and Universal Music are at an early stage and no product launch is imminent, while Warner Music is also in talks with Google about a product, the report added. The companies did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Source: https://thefoxposts.com/google-universal-music-in-talks-for-deal-on-ai-deepfakes-TheFOXposts-32716.html?utm_...
