Social media could harm youth mental health

Social media can profoundly harm the mental health of youth, particularly adolescent girls, the US Surgeon General warned in an advisory on Tuesday, and he called for safeguards from tech companies for children who are at critical stages of brain development. US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said that while social media offers some benefits, there are "ample indicators that social media could also harm children's well-being." "We are in the middle of a national youth mental health crisis, and I am concerned that social media is an important driver of that crisis - one that we must urgently address," Murthy said. Social media use may cause and perpetuate body image issues, affect eating behaviors and sleep quality, and lead to social comparison and low self-esteem, especially among adolescent girls, the advisory said, citing responses from a survey conducted among adolescents. Adolescents who spend more than three hours per day on social me...

Pakistani scientists use AI to determine citrus fruit sweetness

Image
KARACHI: A team of Pakistani scientists has made a significant scientific breakthrough by developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based visual classification method that accurately assesses the sweetness of native citrus fruits. Led by Dr Ayesha Zeb from the National Centre of Robotics and Automation at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), the team successfully predicted fruit sweetness with over 80 per cent accuracy, without damaging the fruit in the process. To conduct their experiment, the researchers selected 92 citrus fruits, including Blood Red, Mosambi, and Succari varieties, from a farm in the Chakwal district. They utilised a handheld spectrometer to obtain spectra, which are patterns obtained from the bouncing light, from marked regions on the fruits' skin. The team employed near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, a technique that enables the analysis of non-visible light spectra, to examine the fruit samples. Of the 92 fruits, 64 were used for cal...

Apple reveals major change for iPhone users keen to type much-used swear word

One of the most notable happenings at Apple’s event for developers on Monday is likely the iPhone maker’s tweak that will keep its autocorrect feature from annoyingly correcting one of the most common expletives to “ducking”. “In those moments where you just want to type a ducking word, well, the keyboard will learn it, too,” Apple’s software chief Craig Federighi said. The iPhone keyboard autocorrect feature has always had its quirks, sometimes taking a misspelled word while texting and substituting what it deems a logical option that ends up changing the meaning of a particular phrase or sentence. Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free on 7plus >> Such occurrences generally produce follow-up texts along the lines of “damn autocorrect!” But the “ducking” substitution is a long-standing source of mirth or frustration, depending on how many times one has had to rewrite their own texts or scream at one’s own device (the iPhone cannot correct one’s verbal epithets). ...

Dell Australia misled customers with ‘shocking’ false discounts

Customers who purchased Dell monitors as part of an online sale several years ago will be refunded, after the Federal Court found the Australian branch of the technology company misled consumers with “shocking” false discounts. France rolls out the red carpet for EV battery factories

For French President Emmanuel Macron, it was a light-bulb moment. It is one of four such gigafactories Macron hopes will transform the poor, former coal mining area near Belgium into a ...
