Microsoft is using pop-ups in Windows 11

Users are reporting seeing Microsoft Edge pop-up ads while browsing on Google Chrome. The pop-up doesn't appear in the notifications window but in c:\windows\temp\mubstemp and is digitally signed by Microsoft. “We are aware of these reports and have paused this notification while we investigate and take appropriate action to address this unintended behavior,” says Caitlin Roulston, director of communications, in a statement to The Verge . Reddit users have been trying to figure out why they have been seeing these pop-ups since the past three months. The company is known to reportedly use a number of prompts to get users to switch from Chrome to Edge Browser, with pop-ups appearing even on the Windows taskbar. Microsoft tried to force Windows users to move to Edge after every update with a full-screen message. Recently Microsoft began taking over Chrome searches in Bing to deliver a response similar to ChatGPT-4 chatbot, which produced a full Bing page to entirely take over th

Chandrayaan-3 rover rolls onto moon's surface as India celebrates

The moon rover of India's Chandrayaan-3 exited the spacecraft on Thursday to begin exploring the surface of the lunar south pole and conducting experiments, and was braced for new challenges, the space agency chief said. The spacecraft landed on the unexplored south pole of the moon on Wednesday, making India the first country to achieve this feat just days after Russia's Luna-25 failed in a similar mission. The soft, textbook touchdown by the lander after a failed attempt in 2019 sparked widespread jubilation and celebration in the world's most populous country. The media hailed the historic landing as India's biggest scientific feat. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief S. Somanath said the lander and the rover were in good condition, and "both are working very well" but the experiments were yet to start. "All activities are on schedule. All systems are normal," ISRO posted on X, formerly Twitter. "Rover mobility operations h

China quietly recruits overseas chip talent as US tightens curbs

HONG KONG/ WASHINGTON: For a decade until 2018, China sought to recruit elite foreign-trained scientists under a lavishly funded program that Washington viewed as a threat to US interests and technological supremacy. Two years after it stopped promoting the Thousand Talents Plan (TTP) amid US investigations of scientists, China quietly revived the initiative under a new name and format as part of a broader mission to accelerate its tech proficiency, according to three sources with knowledge of the matter and a Reuters review of over 500 government documents spanning 2019 to 2023. The revamped recruit ment drive, reported in detail by Reuters for the first time, offers perks including home-purchase subsidies and typical signing bonuses of 3 to 5 million yuan, or $420,000 to $700,000, the three people told Reuters. China operates talent programs at various levels of government, targeting a mix of overseas Chinese and foreign experts. The primary replacement for TTP is a program cal

Elon Musk and others urge AI pause, citing 'risks to society'

Image
Elon Musk and a group of artificial intelligence experts and industry executives are calling for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI's newly launched GPT-4, in an open letter  citing potential risks to society . Earlier this month, Microsoft-backed OpenAI unveiled the fourth iteration of its GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) AI program, which has wowed users by engaging them in human-like conversation, composing songs and summarising lengthy documents. "Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable," said the letter issued by the Future of Life Institute. The non-profit is primarily funded by the Musk Foundation, as well as London-based group Founders Pledge, and Silicon Valley Community Foundation, according to the European Union's transparency register. "AI stresses me out," Musk said earlier this month. He is one of the

As part of the restructuring, Netflix will combine small and midsize picture productions units, resulting in a few job cuts, and scale back the company's output to ensure high quality titles, the report said. It will also centralize decision making of different divisions. Lisa Nishimura, responsible for documentaries and smaller-budget films, and Ian Bricke, a vice president in the film group , will be leaving after more than a decade with the company, the report added. Netflix did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. European privacy watchdog creates ChatGPT task force

The body that unites Europe's national privacy watchdogs said on Thursday it had set up a task force on ChatGPT, a potentially important first step toward a common policy on setting privacy rules on artificial intelligence. The move by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) follows a unilateral move by Italy last month to curb ChatGPT - a stance that Germany's commissioner for data protection said could be followed in Europe's biggest economy. Spain's AEPD watchdog said on Thursday that it too would launch a preliminary investigation into potential data breaches by ChatGPT. ChatGPT, an AI program that grabbed the public's attention for its ability to write answers quickly to a wide range of queries, has grown to be the fastest-growing consumer application in History with more than 100 million monthly active users, while raising questions about threats it may pose to safety, privacy and jobs. Experts, US government and several other European governments hav

The artificial intelligence behind ChatGPT, the homework-drafting chatbot that some schools have banned, is coming to more students via the company Chegg Inc. The US  Education al software maker has combined its corpus of quiz answers with the chatbot’s AI model known as GPT-4 to create CheggMate, a study aide tailored to students, CEO Dan Rosensweig told Reuters last week. "It's a tutor in your pocket," he said ahead of its announcement of CheggMate on Monday. The software will adapt to students by processing data on what classes they are taking and exam questions they have missed, personalizing practice tests and guiding study in a way generalist programs like ChatGPT cannot, Rosensweig said. It will be available next month for free initially, Chegg said. The release is poised to widen what pupils do with AI just as educators are grappling with its consequences. California turns to AI to help spot wildfires

California firefighters are using artificial intelligence to help spot wildfire s, feeding video from more than 1,000 cameras strategically placed across the state into a machine that alerts first responders when to mobilize. In an example of the potential of the ALERTCalifornia AI program launched last month, a camera spotted a fire that broke out at 3 a.m. local time in the remote, scrubby Cleveland National Forest about 50 miles (80 km) east of San Diego. With people asleep and darkness concealing the smoke, it could have spread into a raging wildfire. But AI alerted a fire captain who called in about 60 firefighters including seven engines, two bulldozers, two water tankers and two hand crews. Within 45 minutes the fire was out, Cal Fire said. Developed by engineers at the University of California San Diego using AI from DigitalPath, a company based in Chico, California, the platform relies on 1,038 cameras put up by various public agencies and power utilities throughout the st

Japan eyes tax break for domestic EV battery, chip production

TOKYO: Japan plans to create tax breaks for domestically-made electric vehicle (EV) batteries and semiconductors from April 2024 to enhance economic security, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Friday. The move would follow similar industrial policies in the United States and European Union aimed at encouraging companies to bring production home from China, and would also facilitate the country's energy transition. For the government's fiscal 2024 tax code revision, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will propose the tax cuts for companies manufacturing strategically crucial items in Japan, Nikkei said. Akin to the US I NFL ation Reduction Act, the planned scheme would reduce corporate taxes based on output of batteries and chips, according to the Nikkei. The ministry will draft the specifics including applicable items by end of this year, the report said. Alphabet's Google and Universal Music are in talks to license artists' voices and melodies for artificial intelligence-generated songs, Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing four people familiar with the matter. The music industry is grappling with "deepfake" songs, made using generative AI, that mimic artists' voices, often without their consent.
