Google pushes for antitrust action against Microsoft in UK

Google has called on Britain’s antitrust regulator to take action against Microsoft, claiming its business practices had left rivals at a significant disadvantage, according to a letter seen by Reuters. Microsoft and Amazon have faced mounting scrutiny around the world over their dominance of the cloud computing industry, with regulators in Britain, the European Union, and the US probing their market power. The CMA (Com Pet ition and Markets Authority) launched an investigation into Britain’s cloud computing industry in October, following a referral from media regulator Ofcom which highlighted Amazon and Microsoft’s dominance of the market. In 2022, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft's Azure had a combined 70-80% share of Britain's public cloud infrastructure services market, Ofcom said. Google’s cloud division was their closest com Pet itor, at around 5-10%. In a letter submitted to the CMA, Google said Microsoft’...

Google DeepMind AI reveals potential for new materials

LONDON: Google DeepMind has used artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the structure of more than 2 million new material s, a breakthrough it said could soon be used to improve real-world technologies. In a research paper published in Science journal Nature on Wednesday, the Alphabet-owned AI firm said almost 400,000 of its hypothetical material designs could soon be produced in lab conditions. Potential applications for the research include the production of better-performing batteries, solar panels and computer chips. The discovery and synthesis of new materials can be a costly and time-consuming process. For example, it took around two decades of research before lithium-ion batteries – today used to power everything from phones and laptops to electric vehicles – were made commercially available. “We're hoping that big improvements in experimentation, autonomous synthesis, and machine learning models will significantly shorten that 10 to 20-year timeli...

TikTok obtaining Indonesia e-commerce permit

Short video app TikTok is in the process of obtaining an e-commerce permit from Indonesia's government, state news agency Antara reported, citing the deputy trade minister. In September, Indonesia banned e-commerce transactions on social media, a major blow for TikTok, which had pledged to invest billions of dollars in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, the region's biggest economy. "Before, they (TikTok) were not compliant, they didn't have the permit . Now they are taking care of it," Deputy Trade Minister Jerry Sambuaga was quoted saying by Antara on Tuesday. He said a partnership with a local firm could be done providing it was in accordance with regulations. TikTok, owned by China's ByteDance, has 125 million active monthly users in Indonesia, a country of more than 270 million people. It has been looking to translate the large user base into a major e-commerce revenue source. TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for com...

Barcelona 2-1 Porto: Player ratings as Cancelo & Felix inspire comeback victory

Image
Barcelona booked their place in the Champions League knockout stages with a huge 2-1 victory over Porto on Tuesday. Knowing defeat would give them plenty of work to do on the final day, Barcelona fell behind to Pepe's first-half strike but immediately tied things up through the impressive Joao Cancelo, who lit a fire under his side. After an even first half, Barcelona dominated the second and deservedly sealed all three points when Joao Felix tapped home to steer Xavi's side to the top of Group H. How the game unfolded Raphinha stung the gloves of Diogo Costa inside eight minutes, with Barcelona dominating possession and looking lively in attack, although Porto proved to be a threat on the counter in an exciting opening first 25 minutes. Mehdi Taremi thought he had opened the scoring with a delicious back-heel midway through the half but the offside flag was quickly raised and a swift VAR check confirmed the on-field decision. Clearly spurred on, Porto started to create more ...

India warns Facebook, YouTube to enforce rules to deter deepfakes

India's government on Friday warned social media firms including Facebook and YouTube to repeatedly remind users that local laws prohibit them from posting deepfakes and content that spreads obscenity or misinformation, two sources told Reuters. The warning was conveyed by deputy IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar in a closed-door meeting where he said many companies had not updated their usage terms despite 2022 rules that prohibit content "harmful" to children, obscene or that "impersonates another person". It comes amid growing concerns over deepfakes - realistic yet fabricated videos created by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms trained on online footage - which a top minister this week said this week India is drawing up rules  to address. Chandrasekhar said the companies must raise awareness of the rules by reminding users every time they log in that they cannot post such content, or by issuing reminders. He said otherwise he will ...

After stuffing our stomachs with turkeys and filling our need for Sports with the NFL Thanksgiving slate, we are back on the hardwood today for a loaded slate of NBA In-Season Tournament action. With groups on the line, there is a lot at stake tonight. These are my 2 favorite NBA player prop bets for Friday, November 24. Also make sure you also read our NBA picks for tonight’s matchups. Reggie Jackson, PG, DEN Over 2.5 rebounds (+110) Line available at BetMGM Sportsbook at time of publishing. Recommended 1u wager. This is going to be a weird sweat but one that shouldn’t be a plus-money buy. Since Reggie Jackson has been made the Nuggets starting point guard in place of the injured Jamal Murray, he has cleared this line in 4 of his 8 games. A closer look shows that two of the “unders” were in blowouts where Jackson sat the fourth quarter. Overall as a starter, Jackson averages 2.6 rebounds per 32 minutes — which I believe will be his floor in this high-...

Germany, France and Italy reach agreement on future AI regulation

TEXAS, US:  An agreement on how artificial intelligence should be regulated in the future has been reached by Germany, France and Italy, according to a joint paper seen by Reuters, which is expected to accelerate negotiations at the European level. The three governments are in favour of binding voluntary commitments for both large and small AI providers in the European Union. TikTok to prohibit videos promoting bin Laden

TikTok will prohibit content that promotes Osama bin Laden's 2002 letter detailing the former al Qaeda leader's justifications for attacks against Americans, the short-form video app said on Thursday. Discussions of the 20-year-old letter have spread on the platform this week in the context of debate over the Israel-Hamas war, with some users in the West praising its contents. The letter, which was written after al Qaeda's attack on the United States that killed nearly 3,000 people, criticized US support for Israel, accused Americans of financing "oppression" of Palestinians, and contained antisemitic comments. Bin Laden was killed in 2011 in Pakistan by a US military special operations unit. "Content promoting this letter clearly violates our rules on supporting any form of terrorism," TikTok said in a statement, adding that reports that it was "trending" on the platform were inaccurate. Meta on Wednesday challenged the " gatekeeper " designations for its Messenger and Marketplace platforms but did not appeal against the status for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The European Union in September picked 22 "gatekeeper" services, run by six tech companies - Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet's Google, Amazon, Meta and ByteDance's TikTok. While Microsoft, Google and Amazon did not challenge their designations, Apple is yet to comment on its plan. Nov. 16 is the last date to appeal.
